Our Story
In 2017, the Chinese government began their genocide of the Uyghur people in Chinese-occupied East Turkestan. With our cultural identity being forcibly wiped away at home, Boston Uyghur School was founded in 2019 to preserve the Uyghur language and culture among our diaspora communities in New England. After two years of exclusively serving our Uyghur community, we’ve now expanded our vision to also foster Uyghur cultural appreciation among all people.
What We Do
Boston Uyghur School’s initiatives fall into two interconnected categories: preservation and promotion.
Preservation
Boston Uyghur School functions as a place for Uyghurs across New England to gather and gain cultural nourishment.
We aim to cultivate our surrounding Uyghur communities and play an active role in the preservation of the Uyghur identity in those communities.
Promotion
Boston Uyghur School functions as a community center dedicated to fostering cultural appreciation among all people.
We aim to encourage Americans who haven't previously heard of the Uyghur culture to partake in it—educating everyone on who we are and our place in the world.
